ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the total weekly exposure to leisure noise among university students and to assess its association with self-reported symptoms of hypoacusis. Methods This is a cross-sectional survey. An online questionnaire based on the "Noise Exposure Questionnaire", plus 11 questions regarding hearing loss were sent to 730 randomly selected students. Participants self-reported time spent on different leisure noise activities and their subjective evaluation of the loudness of these activities, converted into equivalent noise levels, were used to estimate weekly noise exposure levels that were compared to occupational noise limits (> 85 dBA = hazardous). Inference statistics was applied to relate hearing symptoms and "likely or having some degree of hearing loss" with hazardous weekly leisure noise exposure levels. Results Ninety-three percent of the participants reported at least one hypoacusis symptom. The most frequent sound-related ear symptom was tinnitus (72%). Fifty-five percent of the individuals presented weekly exposure to noise >85 dBA. Symptoms of hearing loss were more prevalent in those exposed to weekly noise levels >85 dBA. Conclusion This study suggests that there may be hearing loss caused by exposure to high levels of leisure noise in a large part of the study population. Health promotion of hearing conservation should be emphasized at university level. Objective repeated measurement of hearing acuity should be part of integral health services for the youth population.

ABSTRACT

Abstract X-ray microtomography (microCT) is a nondestructive technique used to assess bone morphometry. For an accurate analysis, it is necessary to segment the bone tissue from the background images, avoiding under- or overestimation of the real bone volume. Thus, segmentation methods for microCT can influence the accuracy of bone morphometry analysis. The purpose of this study was to compare two different image segmentation methods available on microCT software (subjective and objective) regarding to the human bone morphometric analysis. Sixteen samples containing a fixation screws covered by 0.5-1mm of bone were scanned using the SkyScan 1173 scanner. Three examiners segmented the microCT images subjectively and recorded the threshold values. Subsequently, an objective segmentation was also done. The 3D analysis was performed for both images using the values previously determined in CTAn software. Five bone morphometric parameters were calculated (BV/TV, Tb.Th, Tb.N, Tb.Sp, Conn.Den) and used as dependent variables. ANOVA showed no significant differences between the methods concerning BV/TV (p=0.424), Tb.N (p=0.672), Tb.Th (p=0.183), Tb.Sp (p=0.973) and Conn.Den (p=0.204). Intra- and interobserver agreement ranged from satisfactory to excellent (0.55-1 and 0.546-0.991, respectively). Therefore, results obtained with subjective threshorlding were similar to those obtained with objective segmentation. Since objective segmentation does not have human input and it is a truly objective method, it should be the first choice in microCT studies that concern homogeneity and high resolution human bone sample.

ABSTRACT

Abstract To calculate root canal volume and surface area in microCT images, an image segmentation by selecting threshold values is required, which can be determined by visual or automatic methods. Visual determination is influenced by the operator's visual acuity, while the automatic method is done entirely by computer algorithms. Objective: To compare between visual and automatic segmentation, and to determine the influence of the operator's visual acuity on the reproducibility of root canal volume and area measurements. Material and methods: Images from 31 extracted human anterior teeth were scanned with a μCT scanner. Three experienced examiners performed visual image segmentation, and threshold values were recorded. Automatic segmentation was done using the "Automatic Threshold Tool" available in the dedicated software provided by the scanner's manufacturer. Volume and area measurements were performed using the threshold values determined both visually and automatically. Results: The paired Student's t-test showed no significant difference between visual and automatic segmentation methods regarding root canal volume measurements (p=0.93) and root canal surface (p=0.79). Conclusion: Although visual and automatic segmentation methods can be used to determine the threshold and calculate root canal volume and surface, the automatic method may be the most suitable for ensuring the reproducibility of threshold determination.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the application of tendency-oriented perimetry (TOP) in detecting the visual function of glaucoma. Methods The traditional threshold perimetry (Normal/Normal strategy) and TOP (TOP/Normal strategy) carried out by Octopus 101 perimetry were used to examine the visual field of 20 normal subjects (20 eyes), 32 cases (32 eyes) of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and 14 cases (14 eyes) of suspected POAG, respectively. The visual field outcomes, indices, point by point threshold variability and defective points of the two perimetries were compared and analysed. Results The negative rate of TOP was 90% in normal subjects. The positive rate of TOP was 75% in POAG , and 100% in middle and late stage of POAG. The visual field indices of two perimetries were positively correlated, with mean sensitivity (MS) of r=0.9335, mean defect (MD) of r=0.9189, and loss variance (LV) of r=0.9621. The point by point threshold variability and defective points of TOP were higher than those of traditional threshold perimetry, but the difference between the two perimetries was not significant (P=0.2019, P=0.4448). Conclusion The visual field indices of TOP and traditional threshold perimetry are positively correlated. The sensitivity and reproducibility of TOP are high in detecting the visual function of middle and late stage of POAG.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the significance of detection the short term fluctuation ( SF) of macular light threshold detected by Octopus 123 automatic perimeter in suspected early age related macular dege neration (AMD). Methods SF of macular light sensitivity, Amsler chart and central visual acuity were examined in 51 patients(66 eyes) with suspected early AMD group and in 32 patients (40 eyes) in the control group. Results SF were significantly different in suspected early AMD group and control group. SF was more sensitive than the examination of central visual acuity and Amsler chart. SF was related to the quantity, location and quality of drusen. Conclusion Visual function of some suspected early AMD patients with drusen may be damaged, though the central visual acuity appears normal.

ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the origin of the concepts of occupational exposure limit, and traces the history and development of thoughts and regislations of various countries and organizations concerning the founding principles upon which it is based. The concepts of establishing standards for occupational chemicals in workplace air constitute a social consensus or agreement about acceptable levels of occupational hygiene. The level of scientific development of a country and the discussion of experts in the field of occupational health play an important role. The physician in occurational health has to be especially concerned to discover and estimate the risks to anyone particularly susceptible to exposures within the hygienically acceptable conditions.
